Mercure Sheffield St Paul's Hotel & Spa ★★★★

Good facilities spacious and comfortable rooms. Great location.

Room was too hot as fan and heating broken. Staff acknowledged and did their best and noted issue during night. Next day mentioned it at checkout promised a call from manager despite repeat calls no one has contacted me.

The location here was truly fantastic, and a great base from which to explore the city. The hotel itself is completely surrounded by a pedestrianised zone, which made it easy to avoid fumes from traffic. The generously sized room overlooked the adjacent winter garden, and was equipped with a fridge, kettle, and seating area, and also well-designed spaces for storing clothes and luggage. Although the decor in the room was a little dated, everything was of robust good quality. Although we didn’t take any meals at the hotel, the main foyer areas provided a stylish and comfortable space to relax with a drink, and appeared modern and recently renewed. The spa was also a great addition which we enjoyed.

Staff here were generally both friendly and helpful, but a little more attention to detail could perhaps have further elevated our experience here: for instance, although a small selection of herbal teas were provided in the room, they were not then updated by housekeeping, and evening reception staff were unable to find any replacements. The small hotel pool should in theory have been a really welcome addition for us, but in practice on weekend mornings it was very oversubscribed: with a portion sectioned off for childrens’ swimming lessons, and many non-resident users also apparently accessing it too, via spa-days and gym memberships. Attempting to swim here was unfortunately a far from relaxing experience, and the facility very obviously needed either proper laning or ongoing supervison. Although the spa itself was very pleasant, it’s changing areas were similarly oversubscribed, and also very confusing in layout, with hotel residents not offered proper lockers inside the rooms, but instead required to use some smaller lockers in a corridor beyond. Day-spa visitors were apparently provided with towelling robes and slippers, and I’d suggest that offering these also to hotel residents might help to alleviate this capacity issue, by giving them the option of changing prior to arriving at the spa area.

Room was clean and very comfortable. Huge bed and seating area was a nice touch.

Would have been nice to have had some water in the room and the phone didn't work

Location and room were very good

Rang reception on a number of occasions from the room to book a table for Dinner. Each time the call wasn’t answered so we made alternative arrangements. Also our parking ticket should have been validated to give 50% off the carpark we used. On exiting the carpark we had to pay full price

Breakfast, Cheap ingredients, TINY sausages, Really bland scramble and the cheapest tomato sauce you can get with a metallic taste, that did not leave me all day, Hash browns were not cooked properly so very soft, Cheap tiny bread slices that ripped every time you spread the butter, You would expect this in a Travelodge but not in a high quality hotel like this, All this for the £15

Location, comfy beds, clean rooms friendly reception.

The noise from the elevator, the lunch staff was so miserable and food was not that good at all, spa had mold in places needs a good clean/renovation.

My room smelled of old socks and no way of opening the windows. I was disappointed with the spa and pool areas they are shabby and need an update.

Astounded by the view from our window overlooking the Winter Garden, and likewise the view from our breakfast table next morning - never had such a tropical vista at breakfast! Location is brilliant for Sheffield city centre. Quiet, comfortable, very clean. Parking worked very well with discounted parking at nearby carpark. Breakfast was fantastic. Highly recommended.

One of these days I hope that there will be less single-use plastic items in a hotel room (tiny single-serving plastic milk cups, individual mini soap bars in plastic wrappers, single-use shampoo, etc). I know they're convenient, but surely there are more sustainable options.

The room was spacious and clean, staff very friendly and happy to help.

We were in room 510 and each morning at 8.30 work men could be heard above our room working.

Breakfast was great. Lovely to be be next door to the Winter Gardens.

The swimming pool changing rooms and showers were filthy. The rooms were basic. Lacked attention to detail. Would have been fine if the hotel were in the next price bracket down, but...

The rooms are massive with big, comfortable beds. The bathrooms had great showers and separate bath tubs. The staff could not have been friendlier. The location is right in the heart of the city. Overall a very clean, comfortable, welcoming stay that made the hotel excellent value for money!

Absolutely nothing!

Amazing location right next door to the Winter Gardens. Staff were really helpful. When they enquired the reason for our visit and we explained it was part of our 20th wedding anniversary celebrations, they upgraded us to one of their privilege rooms which was amazing. The swimming pool, spa and fitness centre were all well equipped and added a degree of luxury; it was great to be able to go directly in the lift to the spa from the room. The bed was huge and so comfortable.

When we asked about the spa and fitness centre, it would have been good if they'd drawn our attention to the fact there are classes on in the fitness centre as well as using the equipment. Unfortunately I realised this too late.

ideal location in the heart of Sheffield and close to the railway station, museums and galleries. good breakfast and large comfortable and quiet room.

Perfect from the moment we set foot through the doors to when we left. Staff are professional,courteous and yet friendly. Room was lovely, next to the beautiful Town Hall. Breakfast was very good, sat looking into the Winter Gardens. Did not have time to try the spa but it does look worthwhile trying next time. Definitely going to return. 10/10

No water in the room (chargeable at front desk). Typical for mercure hotels but it’s poor given the price of the room No shower cap in room Air con in gym had broken so using fans Swimming pool shut for maintenance on 2nd day Rubbish bag from bathroom was just left in the sink one day Changing rooms in the pool for women were just completely chaotic with wet towels and slippers left everywhere. Pointed out to staff member who went to clear up Breakfast not a great selection

The whole experience - we booked in as we were getting married in the Town Hall next door. From the out set staff were rude, obnoxious and arrogant. My aunt stayed in the Novotel next door and they were fantastic. I live in Sheffield and booked the hotel due to it's supposed reputation. My advice is to avoid this hotel at all cost- the customer service was some of the poorest I have ever encountered and I stay in scores of hotels each year due to business and pleasure

The hotel is in a great position, right next to the winter gardens and main square with restaurants. On arrival we signed up for a loyalty card and received 4 free drinks of our choice.
